What is a Mod and what is a Mod Manager?

Welcome to the magical world of modding! I’m sure many of us mod users and mod makers could go on forever on the mechanics of how modding and managers work; but I find that the modder/ YouTuber Gopher answers these questions very well. He’s excellent at covering common questions and demystifies the realm of modding so I’ll let him take over.

Gopher’s Beginner’s Guide to Modding Skyrim : Introduction

Just a note on the two options for managers, Nexus Mod Manager and Mod Organizer:

If you’re just getting started, have very few mods, or don’t expect to get too deep into modding, Nexus Mod Manager is a simple and straightforward and is likely the option for you. We do not recommend installing the mods required for SRM SE manually.

Gopher’s Nexus Mod Manager Tutorial (for new users)

If you’d like to run a decent load of mods (50+), are currently experiencing problems with crashes or conflicts, or just want to try something new and more detailed, it may be time to switch to Mod Organizer. Keep in mind MO is a more advanced manager so it will take some time to learn. Instead of a video, Gopher has a whole playlist in the subject. Stay strong, it’s worth the time it takes to learn! Try watching his introduction will help decide if you’re ready to take the plunge.

Gopher’s Mod Organizer : Introduction

What do I need to play Skyrim Romance Mod Special Edition?

Here’s a list with links to all required and recommended mods. Installation order and details are to follow!

How do I install all these Mods?

I’m going to list installation notes for the above mods in the order I recommend installing them in. This should also be the load order. If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, here’s another Gopher video for you!

Gopher’s Load Order # 1 – What is it?

SKSE or the Steam download (not recommended)

This one’s a bit tricky! There is a steam version, installer and a zipped folder available for download. If you’d like to use a manager go ahead and download the zipped version and use the guide above. When installing manually, NNM, or MM; after installing you’ll need to go to your skyrim folder (C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonSkyrim) and find skse_loader and make a shortcut of it on your desktop. You will be using this shortcut to open Skyrim, or else any mods depending on SKSE won’t work. MO will have a shortcut feature built in, or feel free to make a shortcut yourself.

If you’ve downloaded it from Steam, SKSE will appear in your game library.

The Steam option isn’t necessarily recommended as you’ll have less control of SKSE than if you had installed it using a manager. But if you don’t have many mods, or you just like the convenience, knock yourself out.

You’ll be starting up Skyrim using the SKSE shortcut you made or the Steam option (if you chose it) from now on. The reason is, well thats just how SKSE works and you’ll be running other mods that depend on it to function. Don’t worry, it won’t change your any other aspect of your Skyrim experience asides from how you open the game.

SkyUI

Pretty basic, install as normal. It does require SKSE so make sure you’ve already got that one installed

3a. Enhanced Character Edit and NetImmerse Override

Or

3b. Racemenu (recommended)

If you don’t have a preference or don’t mind switching, you’ll want to install Racemenu. It essentially does the same job as Enhanced Character Edit and already includes NetImmerse Override in it. Ultimately your choice!

4. Fores New Idles in Skyrim (FNIS)

FNIS had their own guide with pictures in a a few languages here:

www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/articles/540/?

Here’s the simplified english instructions:

Download FNIS Behavior Files

ALWAYS say “NO” when asked to “Upgrade?” when prompted in NNM

Install normally using your manager or manually.

Search GenerateFNISforUsers.exe under the given path in the Skyrim installation directory find “GenerateFNIS_for_Users”

For MO: C:Program Files (x86)ModOrganizermodsFores New Idles in Skyrim – FNIStoolsGenerateFNIS_for_Users

For NNM: C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonSkyrimDatatoolsGenerateFNIS_for_Users

Unless you’re using Mod Organizer (which makes accessing FNIS super easy) you’ll likely want to make a shortcut on your desktop. You’ll be running this later once everything is installed so don’t worry about opening this for now!

5.XP32 (XPMSSE)

You’ll need to install these mod first: (which if you installed the mods in this guide in order, you’ll be fine!)

  • SKSE
  • Realistic Ragdolls and Force
  • Fores New Idles in Skyrim
  • Racemenu/ Enhanced Character Edit and NetImmerse Override

The reason is you don’t want any of these mods overwriting XP32. You don’t ever want to overwrite XP32. After installing this say ‘no’ to any mod which wants to install/ overwrite a ‘skeleton’. It will be a pain to fix.

Keep in mind XP32 is completely incompatible with ‘HDT Equipment (everyone option)’. Including ‘HDT equipment v0.2 everyone breast fix’ and ‘HDT Equipment V0.2 for Everyone with Belly and Collision’.

*6. Caliente’s Beautiful Bodies Edition (CBBE)

This is technically more of a recommendation vs a requirement, but you will need a nude female body mod for the later more intimate scenes later in the mod. These two are the most popular options, pick whichever you like!

*7a. Schlongs of Skyrim (SOS)

Or

*7b. Shape Atlas for Men (SAM)

For SOS, you’ll need an account on Lover’s Lab if you don’t already to download, as well as for the next mod. Because of the number of options in in this mod it’s HIGHLY suggested to use some kind of mod organizer and not installing manually. There is a note on how to install manually on the site. Keep in mind it requires:

  • SKSE
  • SkyUI

SOS is fun because of extra options provided in the in game menu, we’ll have a bit more on that later on. It’s also the most widely used option, you’ll likely find more information and resources for support.

SAM will also require an account for their website to download and has an FAQ on installation here. It also requires these mods we’ve already installed:

  • SKSE
  • SkyUI
  • Racemenu

The fun element of SAM is that it provides more body diversity to the men of skyrim than in SOS. Also…. Physics. ;D It tends to be rather hard to install, you’ll want to check on their forum or on SRM’s page for help.

8. Sexlab (18+)

If you’ve followed this guide, you’ll already have everything you need for this mod installed.

  • SKSE
  • SkyUI
  • FNIS

Just use your mod manager to install it, we’ll need to set this up in game but we’ll get to that in the next section don’t worry!

9. Skyrim Romance Special Edition

Go ahead and download Skyrim Romance SE and install it using your manager.

10. SSE Engine Fixes (skse64 plugin)

This improves general game stability and will help you enjoy the mod more smoothly.

Read the description carefully!!

****Note for Clean Version****

While it is indeed true that the non sexlab version is using a fade to black screen instead of the animated scenes of the sexlab version, the mod is still dependant on it’s scripts in order to function properly. Without it, you will have no mcm menu and the animations will not work properly. So we are going to download sexlab, but extract it’s scripts and seq file from it. You do not need the rest of the mod; so don’t worry about the animated scenes, you will only get fade to black scenes.

Download the mod and open it’s zipfile. Then you can either install the scripts and seq file manually, but I would recommend extracting the file in the mod called “scripts” and “SEQ”. Drag these two folder from the zipfile somewhere, on your desktop for example and then repack them into a zipfile and name it something related to skyrim romance so you can easily recognize it. From here on you can install it with your mod manager.

Once you have loaded your game you will get a warning which will say “sexlab is needed for skyrim romance”, you can ignore this. Save and reload and the MCM menu of Skyrim Romance Special Edition should appear now. everything works now as intended.

But we’re not quite ready to play yet…

Everything’s installed, what’s next?

Now that everything is installed correctly in the right order, there’s still a couple of things we have to do before and after we open up Skyrim to make sure everything works.

Let’s start setting up FNIS.

If you’ve followed the guide you either have a shortcut on your desktop or the option to open FNIS within Mod Organizer (MO). Go ahead and open it and you’re going to see something like this:

Because you’re using XP32, make sure “SKELETON Arm Fix” is checked. If you have any other mods which are mentioned, check those boxes too (unless you already have) and if not leave the rest of the boxes below. Click update and let it run.

Great, you’re done! If something went wrong with this process, your character and your NPCs will be gliding across the round stuck in an unmoving scarecrow stance. Don’t panic, just close the game, check your checkboxes, and run FNIS again. Don’t be afraid to post on the SRM forum for more help!

You’re ready to open up Skyrim using SKSE and set up SexLab.

Click on your that shortcut on your desktop for SKSE we made earlier and load a save/ new game. You may see some different text appear in the top left hand of the screen, this is normal. Some mods will do this when initially installed and enabled, all according to plan.

Next you’re going to want to hit ESC, and take a look for the ‘Mod Configuration’ section. If you haven’t installed SkyUI before, this is a new option.

Select ‘SexLab’

Select ‘Install’ from the left side of the menu that appears

You’ll notice the dialog on the middle and right of the window will change, and a prompt to ‘Install/ Update SexLab’ will appear on the right. Click it, and close out the menu and return to the game.

You’ll see several messages appear in the top left of the screen as SexLab sets up. You’ll know when it’s finished when you see a message appears saying ‘Ready!’.

And that’s it! SexLab is installed (with more menu options if you want to check the Mod Config menu later) and you’re ready to experience all that Skyrim Romance 3.0 has to offer.

Something isn’t working, I still need help!

Fear not! There’s plenty of resources online for correcting the multitude of issues which may occur when modding Skyrim. Yet again Gopher has a great video on how to start diagnosing problems.

We also have a website available with a section for mod support. Even if it isn’t a bug or issue inside SRM SE, we’d be happy to help troubleshoot any trouble you may be experiencing. Even if you aren’t experiencing any trouble, please stop by and visit our community!
