“Skyrim is unarguably one of the most successful game series to hit the gaming market- both for Xbox and PC. With millions of players on its multiple platforms, Skyrim delivers an immersive experience to a vast world filled with civil war, diverse cultures, a seemingly endless choice of quests for a player to explore, and- of course- dragons. What’s not to love? As popular as the game has been, with its vast and loyal following of diverse fans, Skyrim is without a doubt geared more towards the male audience. From the armor designs to the npc variety and, even, the storyline in some cases, it quickly becomes apparent that it is the male gamer that Bethesda had in mind when creating Skyrim.

In Skyrim: The Elder Scrolls, players are given the option to marry a follower, and this comes with many benefits, such as: a free meal daily, perks and buffs, and a handy pack mule to follow your hero around. However, the options for marriageable npc’s in-game are vastly out balanced, with majority being female characters. And, let’s be honest, the few male characters that are available leave much to be desired. The dialogue is repetitive and dull. The npc’s themselves are largely flat, and, except for those Companion brothers, Farkas and Vilkas, the male npc’s available are seriously lacking in the story department. Enter stage right: Skyrim Romance! A mod created for the female audience that has been largely overlooked by Bethesda. Skyrim Romance takes the concept of marriage in the game and expands it to a full-blown, immersive, and in-depth experience filled with complex characters and an entertaining and engaging storyline.

With a series of releases and follow-up mods in development, the team over at Skyrim Romance has gone above and beyond to provide a lore-friendly chance to finally find a male character with an interesting story for female players to marry. And, hey- they aren’t bad off in the looks department either. The main release follows the rough around the edges Ranger, Bishop, who with his broody demeanor and unpolished manners, calls to mind a Mr. Darcy type. After assisting Bishop to rescue his faithful wolf companion, Karnwyr, from a ring of dog fighters, the player partners up with the broody Ranger and- frankly- adorable wolf pair to face the world of Tamriel and the vast content added by the Skyrim Romance mod. During the course of the many original quests created, the player meets and interacts with a multitude of interesting npc’s. Each encounter allows the player to uncover more about Bishop’s background and why he is the way he is.

Geared towards an adult audience, many of the scenes involve hilarious situations, jealousy, and some seriously steamy scenarios with the handsome Ranger. The pacing and immersion of the mod allows for a realistic romantic relationship to develop between the female player and Bishop, eventually leading to a proposal, marriage, and even a custom-designed baby, who grows up into a child npc. Without a doubt, Skyrim Romance takes their immersion seriously with fully voice acted characters. Finally, female gamers can have their romance while saving the world from war and dragons.
